What is evidence-based therapy?

I use an evidence-based approach to the therapy process, which means your success and positive results will be our guide. I start by creating a strong foundation of understanding your personality, childhood experience, challenges, and goals, and from there, build a session-by-session map of how we reach your goals.

I will help you practice new skills that you take back into your life and try out. It’s a little like working with a personal trainer. Learn more about my background, training and experience.

“Evidence-based” is an umbrella term describing how evidence, or proof of good outcomes, is a priority for psychotherapy. Evidence-based means therapy that is based on:

  • Using peer-reviewed, statistically proven therapy methods that yield results

  • Working with a therapist who respects using proven techniques in an organized way

  • Relying on regular treatment evaluations to find proof that the therapy is actually working for you

What’s it like to work with Richard Brouillette?

Here are some my own priorities and methods as a therapist:

Consultation. Our initial sessions are an opportunity for me to get a detailed sense of what I think is happening for you, and offer a detailed picture of how I think I can help. If we agree on the approach I suggest, we proceed with the therapy process.

Detailed background on you. Having been a psychoanalyst for 10 years, I appreciate the value of how childhood experience plays a formative role in the conflicts we experience as adults. I’ll devote opening sessions to learning about you.

Treatment plan. We will collaborate on putting a plan together, including goals and a timeline. We will use this as a map, checking on it occasionally to keep us both on track, and provide you clarity on what to expect.

Skills building, home practice, and behavior change. Several sessions in, once we have clarity on our plan, we will start focusing on how you will build new skills for changing mindsets and caring for your emotions. This will mean doing some reading, having regular home practice, and when you’re ready, focusing on changing behavior every week. I will be equal parts your coach, cheerleader, and challenging personal trainer when it comes to making change.

What is self-talk therapy?

I believe we are most healthy when we feel at home with the multiplicity of mindsets, feelings, contradictions, and experiences that make us human. I will use schema therapy, chair work, and expressive writing to inform an approach to therapy that involves a few things:

  • Developing an awareness of the different parts and voices that make up your consciousness

  • Providing parts a chance to express themselves

  • Strengthening the “you” who is aware of your different parts, cares for them as well as maintaining healthy limit setting with them

  • Using role-playing, dialogue, and at home journaling to build your self-care skills

I explore the self-talk process as a means of nurturing your ability to be compassionate and care for yourself in great detail in my book. I also use CBT methods to help manage daily symptoms of anxiety and depression that make life more challenging as we address the sources of your symptoms with parts work.
